Controller Roles Are Not Footnotes for a Job Title

People seated in armchairs in a meeting, overlaid with the labels Business Partner, Change Agent, Scorekeeper and Functional Expert.

A study by the WHU Controller Panel shows nicely that controllers now switch between different perspectives situationally, depending on the question. The clean separation between reporting and business partnering is blurring.

The real difference sits elsewhere, though. Not every role aims at the same thing. Some focus on explaining what happened. Others help make what is coming comprehensible.

What counts is the contribution to decision quality. Concretely: better assumptions, more visible alternatives, more robust decisions. Controlling becomes most relevant where the subject is options, impact and decisions under uncertainty. Not justification.

So I do not read labels like business partner, change agent or decision scientist as new job titles but as different stances. Which alternatives become visible? Which assumptions do we need to question? Which decision becomes more robust as a result?

In the end it is always the same question: how well does controlling support the business in thinking through its alternatives?
