Business Partnering Shows in the Quality of the Questions, Not the Job Title

Many controlling teams now call themselves business partners. That is understandable, and the ambition is right. But day to day, partnering is not decided in the role description.
When the business asks how rising material costs affect the margin, one question decides everything: does controlling calculate? Or does it ask back?
Which product lines still carry a positive margin? Which customers can absorb a price adjustment, and which cannot? And which measures take effect quickly, which need longer?
Because what is at stake is decision quality.
For me business partnering begins exactly there: sharpening the questions that have not yet been properly asked.
The title is changed quickly. The role only emerges in the conversation.
