From Guardian of the Numbers to Architect of Corporate Steering
The role of controlling is changing fundamentally. It came up again at the Campus for Controlling at WHU.
Scorekeeper and guardian functions used to dominate. Today other roles are gaining weight: business partner, decision scientist, change agent. What they share is a stronger orientation towards the future. Making data usable, preparing decisions, guiding change.
The drivers of this shift are not only internal requirements but external forces: geopolitical uncertainty affecting supply chains and tariffs, sustainability and ESG requirements, and the technological shift through AI, analytics and automation.
Controllers no longer only safeguard rationality. They shape decisions, as a bridge between data, technology and management.
The old standard was that the numbers are correct. The new one is that the decision holds. These are not the same thing.
