I hear this a lot at the moment, in conversations and in conference talks. It is probably true. Data preparation, standard reports and the like consume a large share of working time. And almost all of it can be automated.
But the 80 percent was never the actual job.
The actual job was always to understand what sits behind the numbers. And what that means for the next decision. That takes judgment, and no model replaces it.
Almost the entire debate is about what falls away. Hardly anyone talks about what remains.
