The Bottleneck in Corporate Steering Is Not the Technology

The biggest challenge in improving corporate steering has nothing to do with data or AI. It has to do with trust.
That was one of the clearest takeaways from this year’s planning conference. Sartorius presented a strikingly modern forecasting approach: lean forecasting, AI-supported prediction, driver-based scenario simulation.
But the central lesson was not the one you would expect. It was this: most of the work went into building trust in the data-driven process.
Technology can do a great deal today. Acceptance does not follow automatically.
Four points stayed with me. Without trust, any advance remains a parallel process and never becomes a steering instrument. Objectively better forecasts are not enough if the organisation does not regard them as its own. Trust is not built through large programmes but through small, visible successes: contained pilots, backtesting, transparent logic. And responsiveness beats perfection.
The best AI is worthless if nobody makes decisions on its basis. Technologically we are well ahead. For now the bottleneck stays human.
