This piece of psychology says we assign higher value to things we assembled ourselves. Even when they are not perfect. We invested time and effort, so it is our work.
I see exactly this in pilot projects. When the business function is not handed a finished tool but the eventual users actively build their own solution, something shifts. Passive users become designers. “The new tool” becomes “our model, which we built for our problems”.
So perhaps the biggest lever for successful change management is not the extensive requirements document. Or the presentation aligned five times over. It is the nerve to hand the team a kit, the right tools, and some trust.
Even if one screw is left over at the end.
