A Good Model Does Not Change an Organisation

Over the years we have learned how much change sits inside a driver model. That sounds obvious for a company that has been building simulation models for more than ten years. It is not.

In many projects it looked like this: the drivers were right, the model worked, the logic held. And still a decisive effect failed to appear.

Controlling carried on planning alone. Who was responsible for which assumptions stayed unclear. Drivers were discussed, but the way planning itself was debated stayed the same.

In hindsight that is understandable. The driver model had changed the steering logic. But not the organisation that was supposed to work with it.

In our early years we gave this part too little thought. Today it is one of the first things we discuss with customers. Before the first driver is even created.

A good model does not change an organisation. It shows where the organisation would have to change.
