Good Decisions Come From Clarity About the Alternatives
Many companies are making important decisions for the year ahead right now. About investment, capacity, pricing. Often those decisions rest on experience, an understanding of the business model, and a pinch of intuition.
Under mounting uncertainty that is no longer enough.
Scenarios help here because they create transparency about relationships, show chains of effect, and make visible which options are genuinely on the table.
BLANCO is a good example. Scenario analysis there used to take several days. For some years now it has been simulated directly in the management meeting, for instance how changes in price, volume or exchange rates work through to earnings.
That changes the discussion. Away from which number is correct. Towards which option is best.
Scenarios are not an end in themselves. They raise decision quality because they give the decision process structure.
A good decision under uncertainty is rarely recognisable by having turned out right. It is recognisable by the alternatives having been known.
