Budgets Age Faster Than We Can Build Them
Spending three to six months on something so it can be out of date within weeks. It sounds like performance art, and in many finance departments it is reality.
Budgets have a structural problem: they age faster than we can build them. In many companies the assumptions are already obsolete by the time planning closes, despite months of preparation and alignment.
Scenario simulation inverts this. It makes it possible to check within minutes how new assumptions or external changes affect revenue, costs and earnings. That brings speed on what-if questions, and the flexibility to react without spinning up the entire planning apparatus again.
In practice the route runs through a base scenario built on the latest actuals or forecast. It shows the expected development without additional measures, adjusted for one-off effects so there is a clean basis for comparison.
The variants build on top: what effect do strategic initiatives or operational decisions have? Different combinations of measures, alternative growth and cost assumptions, changed market data.
What emerges is not single snapshots of the future but a spectrum of possible developments.
In the end it is not about finding the perfect number. It is about making the best decision at the right moment.
