What you get in 60 seconds

A guided, interactive P&L value driver tree for revenue, costs & EBIT as a visual. You don’t need to know your drivers: choose your industry and role, then ask a question. No prior knowledge, no confidential data, no black box.

Deterministic & transparent

Traceable formulas instead of black-box predictions.

Endogenous vs. exogenous drivers

Internal levers and external influences clearly separated - for clean scenarios.

What is a value driver tree?

A value driver tree (also called driver tree) is a hierarchical model that breaks a financial target such as EBIT down into its operational drivers - for example price, sales volume, material costs or personnel costs. Every connection in the tree is a traceable formula, making visible which levers actually move the result, and by how much.

endogenous (controlled internally) exogenous (external influence)

In practice, value driver trees go much deeper: revenue splits into markets, products and channels; costs into material, personnel and energy. Controlling and FP&A teams use driver trees as the foundation for driver-based planning, forecasts and scenario simulations.

How do you build a driver tree?

  1. Define the target metric: Usually EBIT; alternatively revenue, cash flow or a divisional KPI.
  2. Decompose into drivers: Split the target level by level into its operational drivers until you reach controllable levers.
  3. Define formulas: Model every connection as a deterministic formula - no black box.
  4. Separate endogenous and exogenous: Distinguish internal levers (e.g. price) from external influences (e.g. raw material prices) - the basis for clean scenarios.

The Driver Tree Assistant handles these steps for you: choose your industry and role, ask a question - and after 60 seconds you have an interactive value driver tree built on best practices.

Frequently asked questions about value driver trees

What is a value driver tree?

A value driver tree hierarchically breaks a financial target such as EBIT down into its operational drivers, for example price, volume and costs. Every connection is a traceable formula, making visible which levers move the result.

What is the difference between a value driver tree and a KPI tree?

A KPI tree organizes metrics; a value driver tree connects them mathematically: every level is calculated from the one below via formulas. This lets you quantify effects and simulate scenarios instead of just monitoring KPIs.

Can I build a driver tree in Excel?

In principle yes, but Excel driver trees quickly become static and error-prone. The Driver Tree Assistant creates an interactive tree based on best practices in 60 seconds - and the result can be exported as an image or Excel file.

What are endogenous and exogenous drivers?

Endogenous drivers are internal levers the company controls itself, such as prices or staffing. Exogenous drivers are external influences like raw material prices, exchange rates or tariffs. Separating them is the basis for clean scenarios and countermeasures.

Is the Driver Tree Assistant really free?

Yes. The Driver Tree Assistant is free and requires no confidential company data. You choose your industry and role, ask a question and receive an interactive value driver tree down to EBIT.

We calculated scenarios in fractions of a second, where we used to need an entire day for this work. That was one of our biggest gains and massively increased acceptance for the driver-based approach.
